passport renewal for British citizens living in Italy
Thanks to the lovely woman in the Consulate in Milan who tried her best to assist with my passport renewal challenge - but somebody urgently needs to fix a clearly broken system:

Like many British people living abroad, I travel frequently for work. However, in order to get a new passport either I have to stop travelling and therefore working for several weeks (according to the official Gov.uk Passport Office website, renewal can take 'at least 4 weeks' for those submitting forms from Italy) - or I have to pay to go to the UK and make use of the Fast Track renewal service.

I am now obliged to travel to London in order to renew my passport. This is an appalling level of very expensive service: the cost of my passport renewal now effectively increased by the cost of a plane ticket.

When I said I wanted to complain to the Consulate, I was told that complaints were dealt with by the Passport Office, which has centralised all operations. When I spoke to the Passport Office, they told me to complain to the Consulate or Embassy...
