Spanish Consulate
I am a Philippine passport holder and resident in the UK married to a British national. I also have a biometric NTL ID. We have always travelled to Spain for our holidays, sometimes with my husband and oftentimes with just me and the kids. My visa is always FREE of charge whenever I apply if I'm travelling with any of my family members who all hold British passports.
I knew that with my Philippine passport, I will need a visa everywhere outside the UK so I always take the necessary steps to ensure I have enough time left, like 1 month before the travel dates.
First time I have applied for a Spanish visa was via phone in Manchester and they gave me an e-mail address which I used to apply to get a Schengen visa. They replied enclosing all the docs necessary for me to fill in which I submitted, no problems, no rudeness.
When the Consulate closed and we all had to apply in Edinburgh, I was given an e-mail address again via phone. They e-mailed me with appointment dates to choose from and the forms to fill in and submit. I have kept their e-mail address realising I will need this for future applications/reference. Before I go, I always make sure I comply with the requirements, including photocopies of my application form which I didn't know I had to, from my application of last year. At the Consulate, I overheard the man from the window asking the applicant to have photocopies of ALL documents which he has reminded the man to produce 3 times and each time he comes back, he's not had some docs photocopied and wouldn't use the Consulate's photocopier service, probably bec it's a wee bit expensive but c'mon, if they say you need photocopies of ALL documents, surely you comply? I paid £1 for my application form and the guard on duty processed it for me to avoid any delay.
I know this may sound funny but never had any problems at all in my applications and each time they even extend my visa. It's quite a trek from Manchester so I make sure that I have all of my documentation and photocopies of those docs with me. No problems, no hassle, no rude remarks. I always get my visa earlier than their predicted time slot, like within 3 or 4 days. I have applied for a visa for like 3 times within 2 years and they said to me that next time they will just give me an extended stay as they can see I always go to Spain for our holiday.
My advice is always read their e-mail and their requirements because everything is there for us to follow. They also include the forms on the e-mail which makes it easier for me or anyone to follow through.

I can understand why those people sound "rude" or abrupt. They are not native English speakers and their English is accented and may sound abrupt. Maybe this is another explanation why they appear to be rude? I don't know, I only know that man was very frustrated with the chap who kept coming back with incomplete docs so I could sympathise with him. Just a thought...

Spanish embassy - visa
Different nationalities different requirements, I do believe when it come to applying visa it is important to go thoroughly with their website and check what necessary documents needed. I apply for visa which is ia m holding a spouse visa from Philippines. In my opinion applying a visa in every embassy is exactly the same. I was so nervous after I read all the negative comments regarding the Spanish Embass in Edinburgh i even witness the guy in the counter how he approach people when some documents are missing. I told myself Oh My gosh this is the guy I was really nervous when its about my turn, i am absolutely shaking but i was surprise when I handed my original documents and copies he did not say anything he look thru and ask me where is my copies for my UK Clearance I showed him it was covered by my passport copies. He looked at me ask me have you been to any part of schengen place I replied yes in Germany. He stamped my original and he say expect your passport on July 19 onward. And today not even the date he mention I have my passport. I thought I share this tremendous experience. At the end of the day it is all depend on the person, regardless of what nationalities.

Cannot even get to talk to anyone
How did any of you even manage to talk to anyone in Edinburgh? Their website does not work. it is only recorded messages on their phoneline and when you try to find out anything about renewing your Spanish passport the line gets cut before you can get to find out anything. I have been trying to renew my passport for over three months as it has expired but I am finding it impossible. there is no human contact here.

Rude!!!
If you go there for visa application, The young guy working in that window is absolutely rude. I can understand he is not happy when there are always somebody forget to bring the some documents, but he is not helpful at all. DO avoid this place if you can.

I have to say that I went to get visa for to go to Spain and the guy who works there is absolutely rude and embittered. He shouldn't work with public and is his duty to help and guide people, we are not animals! I really hope the chancellor read all those comments about this guy and do something to respect because I haven't seen more rudeness In my life but I think he is a miserable man. Sorry for him!

Ian
Hi Ian, I will tell what to do for your visa application as I do for my wife. Get the application form from the website for Schengen visa, fill the form and then make sure you have all the documents required, wife passport, photo, your passport, wife UK resident card, original marriage certificate, proof of address, ticket reservation and hotel or friend's address, then get a photocopy from each (document passport, etc) and don't miss any detail. After make online appointment and make sure you've got the email appointment confirmation. Hope this help you.

Nightmare
@ bob edwards

I guess you already know by now, however, it depends what it says on your wife's settlement visa. If it states specifically 'family member of...' then as long as you travel together then you should be fine. If it says 'spouse of...' then you do need a visa.

I'm having an absolute nightmare trying to find some information I need for my wife's visa application. The people who reply to your email only send links to the website which I've already read and is unclear and there is no general query line that has a living person on the other end, only pre-recorded information directing you to the same website. Given what I've read here and in other places on the web I'm dreading actually going to the embassy appointment itself.
