TIRGU-MURES ZOO in Romania
Dear Mr. Prodan:

I am shocked and dismayed over what is going on in Romania concerning a lone elephant, named Tania, being kept in the Tirgu- Mures zoo. This is a disgrace for Romania and has far reaching and global implications. This species is being threatened globally as your country is housing one that that is suffering both mental and physical anguish because of inappropriate health care, substandard living conditions and no opportunity for life sustaining socialization. The world is watching in horror as she suffers. A complaint has been filed with the European Commission and I am certain there will be more to come.

It is apparent that this zoo is unable to properly care for a threatened and endangered species. The director of the zoo has been contacted and believes this is appropriate care: obviously this individual in not familiar with best care practices or does not care? There are pictures circulating on the internet of Tania in a submissive posture on her knees. Please know this is very unnatural and a troublesome posture as it indicates a severe problem. She is also favoring one leg as it is believed that she has an infection in her foot.

I am requesting that you please make immediate arrangements to consult with The David Sheldrick Wildife Trust, a charitable organization devoted to the conservation of elephants and sustaining biodiversity appropriate for elephant survival. Core to the mission the trust maintains the largest wildlife refuge in Kenya, and harbors the single largest population of elephants in the world. They will know where she can best be cared for and how she should be moved.

I recognize that this may appear extreme for one elephant but if you are aware of what is going on with this animal on the global stage you will understand the urgency.

I value your time and hope that you will take this request seriously.

Respectfully,
Julie Martenson, Ph. D.
