You need a Portuguese bank Cheque to make payments for birth/marriage registration at the CRC and the Portuguese consulate in Goa. They accept Portuguese Bank Cheques and Postal orders only.

Denzil as you mention in this line is it we need to email or courier the docs to CRC in Lisbon?

[You just have to mail all the docs to the CRC in Lisbon with a letter in Portuguese (which any translator can give you). ]

Before 61 and minor births are registered free. However for after 61 adult births, You can make a foreign currency demand draft in Euros addressed to the CRC here itself in India. Citibank, HDFC, Sbi etc do it.
When the forex department ask you the reason , Put it under fees for studies or gift. They won't bother much because 175 euros is a very small amount.

Secondly include all your details (address, email, phone number) in the letter you send along with the application. They will generally send you acknowledgement on receipt of the documents. You can also keep emailing them for the process number or call the CRC.
Regarding updates, you need to be patient. It'll take around a year for your case to even reach them.

This will flat out save you around 2-3 lakhs.
If you're willing to spend it, go to an agent.

Another option is you travel to portugal, visit the CRC yourself and submit the documents and payment and immediately get the process number ( you'll still save around 2000 euros).
This is preferable for Angelo or other people living in the UK.

process application directly to CRC ( without an agent)
@Denzil

I appreciate you taking the time to share your valuable experience with all of us on this forum. Could you kindly throw some light on the points raised below i.e.
1)How does an Indian citizen resident in India (who does not even have an Indian passport yet) open a local bank account in Portugal in order to make the payment in Euros to the CRC?
2)Assuming that the applicant gets his/her documents attested/notarised/translated and apostilled in India prior to sending them to the CRC, is it sufficient to communicate with the CRC directly via email in Portuguese in order to keep in constant touch for process updates?

The Brazilians have a much tougher time obtaining nationality, because the highest amount of fraud cases, by far comes from Brazil., their population is 200 million +, Goa's population is very small (even compared to Portugal's population). Obtaining citizenship as a Goan is quite easy and straightforward most of the times, if you only stay in Contact with the CRC and not via any agent. It's not as tough as the agents make it out to be (they make it seem like it's tough in order to make money).
Regarding Brexit it's always better to look at what the European Commission says and not Britain because (frankly) Britain is in a very very weak position in these negotiations. Also (from a worldwide perspective) Britain Today is not as strong as some Brexiteers think. Basically 4 idiotic papers (The Daily Mail, The Sun, The Daily Telegraph and The Daily Express) keep deluding the brexiteers into thinking that Britain is still a great empire (which it's not, it's weak).

At last people are mobilising. \the problem is keeping the info gained at the top. It is a pity we do not have a dedicated board like the Brazillians (link below) this way we could all share experiences and not have to repeat answers.
Denzil, your posts always informative particularly those on Brexit, and this from someone based in the UK. Note with interest that you applied yourself as I intend to.

Everyone
It would be better if you refrain from dealing with any Goan agent and only deal with the CRC in Lisbon. These agents have no power, they only fleece you. They have no say in the process regardless of if they've worked in the Goa consulate or not, their influence is zero.
Only the CRC can register your birth. The Goa Consul General, Rui Carvalho Baceira had recommended you avoid all agents.
The cost of registering a before 61 birth is free. Yet they charge around 1000 euros and pocket the amount. The CRC charges 175 euros to register an after 61 birth and 120 euros to register the marriage. These agents will charge you above 1000 and 500 respectively. If you do a case yourself, you'll save around 3 lakhs. I had done my case myself.
You just have to mail all the docs to the CRC in Lisbon with a letter in Portuguese (which any translator can give you). You can look at the required docs on the Goa consulate's website. If your birth is after 61 you'll need a check from a Portuguese bank.
So if you want to save 3 lakhs you can do it yourself.
If you're willing to spend it, go through an agent.
