Abusive Canadian Customs
As an American frequently traveling to Winnipeg. I am treated very poorly when arriving by Air. Canadian Customs and Immigration project an attitude of dislike for Americans. I am allways cooperative and polite, but feel pushed and vented on as though Americans are not welcome visitors. This only happens when arriving by air not land. If I am detained un-reasonably can I contact this consulate for protection?

Request for a meeting
Good morning,

My sister has lived in Brooklyn, NY, for nearly fourth years now. The first time l took my son for a visit was 2000, when he was 15 He loved it, and looked for opportunities to go back.

I believe it was 2004 when he made his first trip back, flying through Toronto. A very innocuous looking 19 year old. I was shocked to hear that he was detained and questioned by US customs for hours, causing him to miss his flight.
(He had a place to stay, food and lodging, with my sister in Brooklyn.) he flew out the next day and all was well. I believe he was there just under six months.

The next NYC trip was, l believe, around 2009, following a period of working and saving up to go again.
A return ticket was not purchased because he and his cousin has planned to drive up to Montreal when the time came to leave, and a flight would be booked at that time.

Once again, the connections were in Toronto. Once again, he was pulled aside and grilled. He was made to buy a return ticket right then and there. The officer only allowed him a 3 month stay, stating that " he was lucky to get three months".

While in New York, my son requested an extension, which was granted. He was in NYC about 9 months, during which time he stayed alternating with my sister and nephew.

This year John went back to NYC (where by now he has a huge friend base within the arts community), without a return ticket, but also without any problems, via Minneapolis.

Again, another NYC trip, staying with my sister, following a year or so of working and saving up.

While in NYC, John made an face-to-face appointment with Immigration to discuss his situation. He wanted to return to Winnipeg in December. (for which a return ticket is purchased. He also has a job to come back to). One of the options he was given involved going across the border and reentering the US.
This is what he did last weekend, after spending some time in Niagara Falls.
He was denied re-entry.
Last night John returned to Winnipeg via Greyhound.

It is his sincere wish to return to NYC, particularly for sone arts events that are occurring in October. We still have his return ticket for Dec 19.

Can we please meet to discuss the situation?

Sincerely ,
Lilita Klavins
