I had a horrible experience with the Portuguese Embassy. They are not willing to accommodate or help someone requesting information. Everything has to be by appointments. Trying to get through to get an appointment or a response from an e-mail has been an unbelievabile experience, it's now 3 days and still no response. How can we have the public seeking assistance treated this way and ignored. They treat us just like a number with no respect. I have my elderly father trying to renew his green card and expect a 70 year old to send an e-mail or call 7 times a day like I have for 3 days and still right at where I started waiting to get an appointment.

Embassy nightmares
In need of a new passport before travelling to China I filled out the application on line, made an appointment and following the explicit instructions, I arrived ahead of my appointed time with the documents, pictures and my Bank of America Visa.

Security informed me that I was too early and I would have to wait on the street. Since I last wrote to you there is a park bench to sit on, which is a small improvement over sitting on the curb, but there is still no protection form the recent rain, wind and cold. It has always been a mystery to me, given the size of the compound, that there is no safe and secure place for people to wait. After sitting in the cold for about half an hour I was finally permitted to enter the security area to surrender all suspect items, my cell phone and lipstick. Passing through security I preceded to the passport department where I was told that the picture, standard for official documents the world over, did not meet the requirements for an American passport, so I had to have the picture taken again on the Embassy’s machine, €5.

Re-entering the passport department I got in line again and was shortly called to the cashier and gave her my visa card; it did not go through. I gave her my Portuguese visa; it did not go through. The cashier checked with her colleague and was informed the machine was not working. I was told I could get a money order or pay cash. As I am planning to go to China this summer and still needed to apply for my Chinese visa I thought cash would expedite matters, so I asked for the nearest Multi-Banco. The nearest machines were either at the zoo or the Metro Station. So passing through security again I advised them that I was going to the Multi-Banco.

I got the money but my pace was slowing as I trudged back to the embassy. By the time I returned, however, there was a line and as only one person is allowed to enter at a time I was once again out in the cold. When I was allowed to re-enter; I paid my money, was told in about two weeks I would receive word that my passport was ready and I would be able to go through this entire process again.

Happily I am in quite good shape for sixty eight years, but I can imagine, that in addition to being quite time consuming, this is not an easy experience for the old, infirm or families with children. I certainly understand the need for security, but I would like to think we could do better than this.
