Marriage in Hamburg
I'm British and hope to marry my German girlfriend soon.
I have approached the Hamburg Standesampt and they told me which documents to prepare for them.
Astonishlingly in addition to proof of my divorce in 1998 they asked me to provide "proof" of my former spouses nationality AT THE TIME OF DIVORCE! (19 years ago).
After several courses of investigation and several hundred Euros/GBP in fees I am no closer to acquiring such a document. A British Barrister has told me it doesn't exist and the Standesampt are being unduly difficult.
It states in the European Convention Article 12 that my "right to marry is subject to national laws on marriage".
I have also found out that a a certificate stating there are no restrictions to the marriage, (Ehefähigkeitszeugnis) can be acquired by contacting the British Consulate in Hamburg but they never answer the phone?
Has anyone experienced the same difficulties regarding proof of nationality retrospectively? How was it resolved? This is proving more difficult than learning German!

register
Hello, we are moving to Germany in August. Do we need to register with the embassy as we are British?
Will that be sufficient enough to do in Hamburg or do we need to travel to Berlin to register.
We are planning on living here until our son will attend college back in the UK (around 6 years).
Or do I just de-register at HRMC and city council?

cheers
