My Friend is trying desperately to leave Turkey at this moment but says the travel agent told her that she is required to carry cash ($1000.) on her for travel. I need to know why? She has plane ticket but cannot depart Turkey, she says. Can someone help me with the "why?" she needs to carry cash to leave, she's a Canadian citizen.

An account of the Armenian Genocide based on the eponymous book by survivor Arshaluys Mardiganian
Review
The main interest of this film on the Armenian genocide is historical. It was produced by the American Committee for Armenian and Syrian Relief in 1919 on the basis of the book written in 1918 by Aurora Mardiganian who also stars in the film and was an eye-witness to many of the scenes it depicts. Only 20 minutes survive of the original 9 reels. Aurora Mardiganian was born on 12 January 1901 in the Ottoman Empire. She was deported with her family in April 1915 and forced to march more than 1,400 miles. Most of the members of her family died and she was sold on a slave market. She was eventually able to escape via Tiflis, St. Petersburg and Oslo, to the United States where she arrived in November 1917. When filming began in 1918, she was 17 years old.
From a cinematographic point of view, this film is a precusor of the docudrama genre which will develop after WWII. Despite the poor quality and the limited amount of the surviving material, it is possible to see that this was a convincing and moving reenactement of the first historical genocide. The film keeps a constant tension thanks to the use of short duration shots and frequent changes of camera angle. Original camera angles are often used and images are carefully composed. One of the most striking one is the shot of a crucified young girl with an eagle perched on one of the arms of the cross. The film alternates wide-shots with large crowds of extra with medium shots and close-ups showing religious leaders, local authorities and individual victims.
Synopsis
The film starts with a sequence recalling the beginning of WWI in 1914.
In 1915, begins the greatest tragedy of the Armenian people. In January, the separating and disarming of Armenian soldiers starts. Many are made to dig their own graves and killed while others are used for manual labour. In April the deportation begins. A priest is seen reassuring his people, urging calm and restraint, when a messenger arrives on horseback announcing the massacre of men, women and children in Van. Violence takes place in different areas. First, men and leaders are arrested by the Army and marched out of town, where they are killed by gunfire, swords or other means. Then deportation of all Armenians, including women and children is organised throughout the Empire and their houses and shops are looted. The dying and the dead are plundered and sometimes eviscerated to find hidden gold and jewelry. The official deportation order is posted after deportation has already begun in many places.
Mr. Erdogan is destroying secular democracy and freedom of speech in Turkey. He is thus encouraging Islamic extremism and it is getting more dangerous for foreigners to travel in Turkey. Many normal Turkish people are now afraid of him.

My wife and I are thinking of buying a condominium in Istanbul or Izmir. Are there any special requirements? Also, how many US Dollars can we transfer to a Turkish Bank per person? Thank you, gregroman4@gmail.com
I want to leave USA, stop in Turkey to attend a conference and then go to my home country (India). I will not have return journey back to USA. Is it possible to get visa for such case while I am here? this trip will be self-funded. pls advise. I am working in Los Alamos National Lab, NM, USA under H1-B visa.
I have recently been contemplating a trip to visit a friend in Istanbul. However, I do not believe I want to visit a place where a peaceful protest to save a park escalates - in a mere few days - to the use of agent orange by the police on the protesters. There is no reason for this. Especially over a park.
