Your Excellency,
I was shocked to learn of the case of Meriam Yahia Ibrahim, who has been sentenced in Sudan to 100 lashes for adultery and to death for apostasy. These sentences are a severe violation of her human rights.
I understand Mrs Ibrahim’s 20-month-old son, Martin Wani, is detained in Omdurman Federal Women's Prison with his mother and that since her detention, Mrs Ibrahim has been denied visitors and vital medical treatment, despite being heavily pregnant.
Martin Wani’s incarceration violates Article 37 of the Convention of the Rights of Child, while Mrs Ibrahim’s sentences violate the Sudanese constitution and Article 18 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which guarantee her right to freedom of religion or belief.
In addition, this sentence violates the good conscience of faithful Muslims throughout the world, who are rightfully opposed to seeing their religion used to excuse tyranny and violence.
Please use your good offices to press for the immediate and unconditional release of Mrs Ibrahim and her son, and the annulment of her sentences.
Thank you for your assistance in this matter.
باسم الله الرحمن الرحيم
