Letter to the Ambassador
I, along with my wife and granddaughter have just returned from a very pleasurable tour of your country, despite the serious attempt made by your Embassy in New Delhi to scuttle our trip. Never in all my travels around the globe have I encountered such callousness from the visa section of any other country.

When we submitted our visa applications, we were asked to provide proof of our relationship with our granddaughter. This came as a surprise as we had not received a similar demand from the embassy’s of the other countries we were to visit. However, we complied with the demand on the same day.

After three working days had elapsed, I tried to enquire from your visa section about the status of our applications but was asked to contact VFS, the agency to which visa collection and delivery had been out-sourced. The VFS, however, merely acts as a post office and has no clue about the processing of visa applications. With only two days left for our scheduled departure and in sheer desperation, we sought the help of an Indian government agency, having dealings with your embassy, to find out about the fate of our visa applications. It was from this agency that we learnt that that our visas were being held up for want of a letter of consent from the parents of or our granddaughter, permitting her to travel with us. We were appalled by this revelation since neither had this requirement been indicated at the time of submission of the visa application forms, nor had the Embassy thought it necessary to communicate the same to us telephonically. With great difficulty we managed to procure the letter and submit it on the same day. Thanks to the government agency and no thanks to you, we were able to retrieve our passports on the day prior to our departure. If we had not been fortunate enough to have access to such an agency , our programme would surely have had to be cancelled , resulting in huge financial loss, in terms of non-refundable air tickets, visa fees, booking charges for hotels and tours, etc. Even if I had sued you for damages that would not have healed the trauma caused to a 9 year old child for the unexplained cancellation of her holiday plans.

I am surprised that your country which is aspiring to be counted among the top nations of the world and which has substantial financial stakes in India, is doing such a poor job of selling your country to Indians. It probably explains why South Korea is not a popular tourist destination
