brother dies in Dalian. Next of kin not notified, body cremated and no ashes to send home
My brother was found dead (suicide they say) wrists slit and hanged in his apartment on 17 September 2013. He flew out of SA on 25 August 2013 to commence work as an English teacher for the University of Technology in Dalian, China. He was promised an advance in salary in order to allow him to purchase food and travel fair for his first month or so - this never materialised. So he was in a foreign country without any money. He was on medication for high blood pressure and would have needed to repeat his prescription after his first month. He would have had no money for this either.
His last email to me on the 14th of September stated that he was going to die! on the 17th of September, he was dead! He was terribly afraid of being in China?
After trying all avenues of contacting him, emails, facebook is not allowed! google is not allowed! and I left messages at the university (emails dont get answered either) his agent also did not respond to emails. Was worried as Christmas and his birthday had come and gone and still no contact.
I eventually managed to get hold of the SA department of international relations and cooperation (or lack thereof), who advised that the SA police force had been looking for his next of kin since September. I found out on the 28th February 2014! I have been in my current address (and I purchased his ticket) so my details would have been on record - our saps took all of 5.5 months and still never contacted me. Bar one message left on my answering machine in October 2013, which I responded to and left messages for a Mr Malan, The Director General. No note on my door, no messages left at my place of residence, no telephone calls - NOTHING! No call from the SA Embassy here or Beijing. No calls bar one back in October, that I responded to and left messages for a Mr Malan to contact me......nothing till I eventually managed to make contact on the 28th Feb 2014. He was cremated without my consent on the 7th December (according to Chinese law) he was a South African in a foreign country and was treated without the respect that he deserved!

I have asked for PROOF OF DEATH by reason of photographs which the police would have had to have taken. Police have ruled it a suicide. No clear fingerprints have been received by the SA officials, no autopsy report, no ashes, non of his belongings, only his ID book, passport and bank cards - removed from his wallet (no wallet?) I have asked for death certificates and only just received these in the month of March 2014. I have left messages for his employer and the associate whom identified the body, to contact me so that I van verify that he is ACTUALLY DEAD and not sitting in a Chinese jail or other!

I am now left to pick up the pieces and try to bury my brother without his ashes. Without closure of knowing
what happened and confirmation of his death. The way in which this case has been treated is disgusting and our governments are supposed to look after South African citizens abroad - they did not look after my brother. They did not do their job for which I am contributing to by paying my taxes.

a very angry, hurt sister!
