Introduction:

Zillah Good Organics is a non-chemical fertilizer which contains a highly concentrated soil nutrient. It is processed in Uganda by Pointsmartconsult (U) Ltd. This product was researched and discovered by a local entrepreneur, Nicholas Ssewanyana, along with Jane Namisango Nakimera. It is an organic dried, pelleted product, manufactured and powdered from fresh domestic cow dung, poultry litter, coffee hull, rice hull and trona, which is the best to use on plants.


Uganda is predominantly engaged in farming of all kinds but due to environmental changes worldwide, there are high chances of our soil losing its natural fertility. Fertilizers are encouraged because plants need nitrogen. It is true that Uganda was gifted by nature and blessed with food and our soils do not need as much fertilizers as one might think, but instead need soil supplements. These can be both locally and organically prepared for Ugandan farmers to use on their plants.
We have been working on this project and we have had a chance to test what we have been doing in the last eight months of the years2013. We cannot wait for Ugandans and Africans at large to have food shortages and other problems again because of soil infertility and changing seasons. Zillah Good Organics have the answer!

Justification:

Organic fertilizers have become increasingly popular and more effective. Our fertilizers are locally produced from natural waste which is highly rich in nutrients and is an excellent choice for the growth of plants. They are faster when breaking down into the ground due to highly concentrated nutrients and nitrogen that react well. It is this form of fertilizer which helps plants to develop.
Organic fertilizers contain formulations suitable for fine turf, as well as for fairways and outfields. These contain a balance of quick-release nitrogen, phosphate and potassium for an initial response from the plant. This initial release is followed by further response from the methylene urea and a sustained release from the plant proteins. They also add valuable micronutrients, growth homones, and vitamins which help disease tolerance, reduce plant stress from drought and increase frost tolerance.


More impact of organic fertilizers:
• Contain iron and magnesium for excellent colour response
• Can be used all year round depending on the formulation
• Contain more protein gram for gram than conventional animal waste products


Goals:
To encourage and improve on the production of agriculture so that women and families can be more self-sufficient in food production and increase their incomes. Eventually to make Ugandas agriculture self-sufficient.
To be able to sustain the health of soils, ecosystems and people by creating jobs amongst Ugandans as well as generating revenue to the country.
To enable organic agriculture combines tradition, innovation and science to benefit the shared environment and promote fair relationships and good quality of life for all involved.

The number of women in the project shows the importance of the role of women in the production of food in Africa and particularly in Uganda. As a control and monitoring mechanism, we are willing and ready to co-operate with any institution willing to bring in advice, funding, etc. It is our duty as a company to identify and bring in experts and ideas where and when needed. It remains our duty to work upon the expectations of our project.

Objectives:
a. To be able to sustain the health of soils, ecosystems and people by creating job opportunities amongst Ugandans as well as generating revenue to the country
b. To establish and have an operational agricultural scheme for active production in Uganda.
c. To assist farmers to develop to commercialize farming, thus increasing agricultural production and eventually their income-earning capacity.
d. To strengthen community action planning, management, and mobilization for sustainability.
Historical facts of organic farming.

Organic agriculture in Uganda has been driven by developments in the international markets and trade. The world market for organic products and production is now estimated to be above 30 billion US Dollars. Average global growth in demand and market of organic products is currently estimated to be 25% per year. The growing consumer interest triggered off rapid growth in international trade in organic products. We are aware that the trading environment is witnessing changes due to increased consumer consciousness regarding the environment and social issues of production and marketing. By 2003, Uganda was already in the 13th position world wide and 1st position in Africa in terms of size of land under organic agriculture production with estimated 185,000 hectares of land under organic agriculture covering 2% of agriculture land with 45,000 certified farmers. Organic agriculture started as a response to the unfolding market opportunities in Europe in 1993.

Today, Uganda is recognized as one of the key players in the international trade of organic products and among countries with highest potential to take a key position in the market.

Zillah Good Organics background.
In April 2013 the first sample was tried. It came out well. This has since been followed by a number of trials which have always been successful to plants. We have sought advice from friends, farmers and professionals.
Creating a big impact to communities have also been recommended and this is part of the proposal from Zillah Good Organics. This will help fight unemployment and poverty amongst families as well as improving our farming.
Initial activities time plan for Phase One.
February – March 2013
Chasing-up for necessary practicing and professional paper work such as licenses and other necessary registrations from agricultural associations and government etc, to enable comfortability of our work.

April 2014
Purchase of waste products and immediately begin the manufacturing process of Zillah Good Organics fertilizers using our final recommended rates available.
May 2014
Purchase of more necessary equipments, such as (a mixer, diesel milling machine, boots, head gears, gloves, overalls nose covers, etc.) and re-setting up the workshop.

June 2014
Training and sensitizing communities, consumers and other agricultural selling points/shops door-to-door, village-by-village the importance of our product and to teach them more skills and when or how to use the product.

July 2014
Gathering feedback from agricultural selling points/shops, farmers and other consumers.
September 2014

The budget have taken into account most of the key items needed in Phase One. This is done to enable the project go on even if it’s not making any profits.


Source of funding.
There is no proper source of funding so far the project is self-funded.

What have been achieved as at now?
We have brought hope to communities and to farmers around us as well as purchasing one milling machine which is operated manually and it can mill up to 100 kg. Per day. We have introduced our product to the public at the same time, introduced it to the Faculty of Agriculture Soils and Science at Makerere University Kampala Uganda. We have introduced the product to farmers and given out free samples which have successfully worked leading to high demand on our side. We have identified sources and people who are willing to provide the materials such as cow dung, poultry waste, etc.

Expectations
It is anticipated that once the projects starts well it will employ more people and bring much revenue to Uganda as well as helping the soils and the plants.
Funding applied.
If funding is provided to cover the starting costs as listed above in the budget, there will be possibilities of developing at a faster rate which will accomplish the initial plan. There is a further strategy to increase on the number of soil fertility and job employment in the country (Phase Two?). In this way, we shall be able to export our products internationally in future years.
Conclusion

BACK GROUND INFORMATION.

Rwenzori youth initiatives for development (RWEYIDA)was started in 2003 by a group of 25people (women and youth). It’s a registered Non-governmental organization at the National level under Reg. No.S.5914/6079 and owned and managed by youth both male and female. It operates in Kasese District in the Rwenzori region of Uganda.

Its main goal is to effectively enhance community Self confidence and capabilities to advocate and integrate issues in development programmes at local and national building by the people as full participants on an equal footing with Men and Women and not just as beneficiaries.


RWEYIDA was started having realized that women and youth in our community are over pressed by men because they are poor. And the increased poverty among women is because of lack of information about the rights of women. So we thought of creating awareness about their rights as one way of empowering women. As you may know that information is knowledge and knowledge is power.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

Promoting the use of ICTs to end Violence against Women in Kasese Municipal council is a project which is designed by women to strive to end domestic violence and promote healthy, non-violent relationships in Kasese Municipal council community by increasing public awareness and promoting the rights of women using ICTs as collaborative tool for development. It will lead to greater information sharing in terms of using the phones or the internet to report cases of violence to the law enforcement officers and other local community authorities for their rescue and seeking legal advice of redress. The project will facilitate the procurement of ICT tools, training, radio talk shows and monitoring and evaluation.


OUR CURRENT ACTIVITIES INCLUDE:-
Sustainable farming, Savings and credit, soap making, prevention of gender based violence and HIV / AIDS awareness .

PROBLEM STATEMENT

The increasing Violence against women is due to social / cultural belief society attributes to women, poverty and lack of information among the women and girls in our community.
Most of our women are farmers who cannot afford the high costs of the modern information, communication technology; this makes them lag more behind in terms of Development.
Inadequate information and services makes it harder for the rural poor women to make a living or to improve their quality of life. Women and girls, given their gender roles, are relegated to the kitchen further away from the public spheres. Once there, they lack access to basic information and so cannot actively participate in decision making process but remain on the receiving end of services. They, therefore, miss out important information on prevailing opportunities including the marketing of their farm produce.

Men take advantage of the women multiple roles to access information and market the produce very fast as women remain without knowing the proceeds of the income realized. The middle men also take advantage of lack of marketing information by attaching low prices to the produce marketed by women at farm level.
This tendency makes women and girls remain in the vicious circle of poverty which abets and fuels Domestic Violence among this marginalized group.
Women and girls in such a situation are prone to sexual abuse which may lead to increased STDs especially HIV/AIDS and unwanted pregnancies. Therefore, women and girls would use ICTs like cell phones to report such information immediately to police or some other persons for their rescue.
So, to bring access to information to the proximity of the rural poor women will not only contribute to ending violence against women but also improving the quality of life.

Thus, Rwenzori youth initiatives for development (RWEYIDA) having recognized this problem, seeks to raise awareness among women and the women youth members and the community at large and build its capacity and be able to train other women and youth and some men in the use of ICTs. This project will also serve as a learning scheme that can be used to open up space for other youth and women in the area to replicate and make use of ICT for development.

The project is intended to address the above problems by creating awareness among the community on the use of ICTs, procurement of some ICT facilities like modem or cell phones and facilitate training of other youth and women / girls on the use of ICTs for development and ending Violence against Women.
The training shall include, hands on computer, E-mail opening and sending, cell phone operations, SMS sending, (call for meetings) among others.
We shall also conduct follow up activities.


PROJECT OBJECTIVES:

- To train 20 women on the use of ICTs to end Violence against Women in 3 months.
- To create awareness on the use of ICTs among rural community members to end violence against women within 1 year.
- To enable youth , women and girls acquire knowledge and skills to use cell phones to report violence related abuses.
- To enable youth and women collect and access weather and market information updates on a daily basis.




METHODOLOGY / IMPLEMENTATION STRATEGY

- Mobilization of members and other stake holders on the importance of using ICTs to end violence against women in the community.
- Training youth , women members and girls on the effective use of ICTs to improve their livelihood and end Violence against Women and children.
- Conducting Radio talk shows to mobilize and create great awareness to a wider community on the use of ICTs to end Violence against Women and children.
- Using the existing trained members who were trained by FURA to provide training to other members.
- Home-to-Home visiting to monitor individual members how ICTs have helped them to end Violence against Women.

- 20 women youth and girls trained on the use of ICTs and make ICT work for the rural people to women to end Violence against Women.
- Improved quality of life due to market accessibility and reduced Violence against Women.

SUSTAINABILITY PLAN:

The project to last even after funding, RWEYIDA will work with the local government of Kasese district to help incorporate in the district budget for this will also involve most of the youth and women. In every district, the youth vote is put in budget. So this will be done through cooperation with the local leaders who are the counselors to help in the lobbying of the project.

Internet services shall be used to generate income for the non members of the project shall be paying for services.

Those who shall be trained shall pay a little training fee of Uganda shillings 30000= (thirty thousand for trainers allowance.
