Inter-generational transfer of banana and coffee farms in Itongo and adjacent villages has resulted in land fragmentation, as land must be shared among many children. The situation has led to reduced farm sizes through multiple small land portioning that cannot stabilize food security and income to sustain the geometrical population increase in the village. Poverty circle and its expansion are common in the village community that experiences food insecurity and malnutrition as well as unsustainable low income. As farmers seek to maintain food security and income levels on smaller areas of land, they have increasingly diversified in production of alternative crops for food and income but at rare success. To rescue the situation innovative agricultural intervention by initiating project of production and marketing graded and packaged round potato. This has explored through from both local and international literature review and the experience on the local area to visualize the realism of the project on the actual local situation. By diversifying round potato production in banana farms will maximize harvest for food security and income generation as the revenue from potatoes can be as much as 10 times greater than the revenue from coffee, banana and grains when intercropped. Simultaneously, banana productivity will increase as organic and inorganic fertilization of soil for potato production will benefit banana plants for efficient production. Also favorable local weather conditions, supportive research works on banana + round potato intercropping farming and good support from village and district governments in forms of infrastructures and subsidy are key driving forces to project success. Peasants are interested in innovative farming practice and ready to learn alternative practices of modern market oriented farming, hence potato farming through inter-cropping with banana crops will be a solution for the existing food shortage, malnutrition and poor income among the peasant families.
With above description, I on behalf of the Itongo villagers, seeking any development partner who is keen interested to change the livelihood of the marginalized poor peasants in Itongo village especeally Women who traditionally has little chance to own land compared to men, hence banana and coffee earning go to men despite of women and children' labour in these farms .
I'm ready for explaining the details once any interested Partner will need to know what, where when and how to intervene.
