Dear Honourable Prime Minister

Animals Asia is deeply shocked and horrified to see the images of immense cruelty and suffering inflicted upon many thousands of animals following the Gadhimai festival in Bara, Nepal on the 24-25 November 2009. Despite our letters appealing for this slaughter to be prevented, the Nepalese government have chosen to ignore these pleas and justify this mass cruelty towards innocent animals by allowing this slaughter to take place.

This unregulated slaughter is illegal under Nepalese laws and has caused immense suffering for the hundreds of thousands buffalo, pigs, chickens, rats, goats, and pigeons that have been slaughtered. It has also brought shame upon your country and your people.

As an international animal protection group that have always welcomed and supported the animal welfare progress in Nepal, particularly your recent ban on the export of macaques for research, we are horrified by this cruelty.

The images of animal cruelty witnessed at the festival have been distributed worldwide and have seriously damaged the image of Nepal as a tourist destination for international visitors.

Traditions is no justification for this barbaric act, people both within Nepal and internationally are appalled at this atrocity and we urge you to work in conjunction with the festival organizers to prevent this from happening again.

Animals Asia urge the Nepalese government to enforce stronger animal protection laws to protect animals from this barbaric suffering and respectfully ask that the government embrace non-violent alternatives and end the slaughter of animals at future religious festivals.

Sincerely,
