Sarangi Maestro of Nepal
Shyam, started his education (singing, dancing and playing sarangi) at the age of eight with his grand father Magar Gaine,(Gandharba) who is a great Sarangi player and father Ram sharan Nepali, a renowned sarangi maestro of Nepal. Shyam made his first public appearance at a musical competition held at the Royal Nepal Academy at the age of 15. Later on, he formed a music band Surva and released his first CD. His discography currently included more than 36 publications. He is now one of the most noteworthy instrumentalists of Nepal. His Sarangi playing reflects both the typical Nepalese and fusion style, which is remarkably very soft, melodious and touchy to the heart. He has rendered more than 5000 performances both in Nepal and abroad.
Mr, Shyam is popular as a most talented and innovative musician who can play classical, folk and modern music in Nepal today. Shyam’s philosophy is two-fold. Firstly, he, as a musician, seeks to devotes himself to the art of his ethnic Gandarba music and instrument Sarangi and by celebrating it as the symbol of loving and respecting one’s own traditional music and conserving it. Secondly, he seeks to inspire young generations by playing raga, modern and indigenous folk music with world music in a way that is faithful to the spirit of the music.
Shyam has formed a band named ‘Rudra’ and is also a member of band named Sukarma and is a members of Singhini Research Centre, that is working for the promotion and preservation of Nepali traditional and classical music. He has been traveling extensively in different parts of the world such as Switzerland, France, Germany, Austria, Belgium, Italy, Japan, Korea, Holland, Denmark, Kyrgyzstan, and India etc. He has released 36 albums and among them several CDs with his Sukarma Band such as Karma, Kirateswar (with classical ragas), Ghansi (fusion of classical and folk), Mustang (music for meditation) and Upasana (a unique and rare combination of sarangi and sitar), Mountain Mantra. And he has successfully released his solo albums such as Journey to Nepal, Machhapuchere, Rhydhun,.
