OMER ZIAULLAH AN “INTERPRETER FOR ISAF-ITALIAN”

My name is Ziaullah Omer, I am from Laghman province, but over the years we are living in Kabul Afghanistan, and the government also accepted that we are related to Kabul now, even they changed our Tazkera to Kabul, and I burnt in Kabul in 01/04/1984.
I graduated from Rahman Ba Ba High School after my schooling I started to learn English and computer courses in 2001and finished it in 2004.
After that I started to work with the Deaf peoples where I learned Sign Language as well I was working with them as an Interpreter from 2004 up to 2007.
Than started to work with ISAF ( Italian Task Force (8 months), French Force (8 months), and British Forces (6 months) ) as an Interpreter in different provinces of Afghanistan ( Surobi district of Kabul with ITALIAN TASK FORCE, Helmand Province of Afghanistan with British, and Kandahar Province of Afghanistan with Canadian).
My job was to interoperate and translate include in-person translation and interpretation, Telephone interpretation, Sign language Interpretation, Video remote interpretation, and document interpretation even while we were going to a village having discussion with the villagers.
And after that started to work again with ISAF as a Fire Fighter in Kabul Afghanistan International Airport for more than five years (still working). (Since 01 may 2010 up to date)
My job is to:
• Save and protect live and property.
• Fight fire, Wear breathing apparatus and conduct search and rescue activity and hazardous and potentially hostile environment.
• Command and control at emergency situations.
• Prevent, protect and respond to fires in emergency situations.
• Drive and operate all emergency major foam and structural vehicles.
• Operate fire service equipment’s including specialist rescue and cutting tools.
• To ensure major foam and structural fire fighting vehicles and their associated and ancillary equipment are tested and maintained.
• Comply with unit standard operating procedures.
• Adhere to COMKIA and Chief Fire Officer Health and safety policy and assess risk.
• Maintain a professional standard of fitness.

During working with ISAF I received death threat warning from Taliban in May 2013 and then in July some written warnings saying that I am a Christian, an Infidel because I am working with them it’s all because they spotted me on Sorubi district of Kabul while working with ITALIAN FORCES and I reported this to Afghan Security and to my Ex Fire Chief Andy Dixon (A Britain) and he rely this to CI office and they called me to answer their questions regarding my threats which I answered and submit my death threat warning letters to them.
My work is very dangerous. Even if I stop working for ISAF they will still come after me because they found my house, they burn schools, they kill people and they are beasts. But this is our country and I have to support my children. What else can I do? Sit here and cry? I am an educated man, but I would not be able to work anywhere else, in my native province or in the Afghan capital Kabul.
I have no complaint with the ISAF-ITALIAN TASK FORCE; they are good people and kind. I love them and respect them. I have learned a lot from them. There are great people in our AOs [areas of operation] in Sorubi district of Kabul what a Lovely people always treated me as their own soldier.
"But we don't have a secure future. The US military has a policy for interpreters (SIV) but Italian doesn’t. I don't have any insurance; I don't have a medical allowance. If something happens to me what am I supposed to do? How am I supposed to support my family?
I have seen a lot of my friends they lost their life’s while working as Interpreter with ISAF- ITALIAN, One of my friend lost his life in Surobi district of Kabul while working with French troops of ISAF we were four Interpreters and was introduced to French through Italian Task force generally we were three Interpreters in my village one of us accepted by Australians they took him away the other one escaped illegally to Austria and now I am the only target for them in my whole village. Interpreters are "so important" to the reconstruction and stability process but their plight has been ignored.
There are tons of Taliban in my village, and they all know that I worked with the ISAF, when I was working as an Interpreter I did not published my last name for security reasons the Italian were calling me as Omer. If I fail to go to abroad, my life is over. I swear to God, one day the Taliban will catch me.
There is a serious threat to my life. The Taliban had spotted me on the job and had spread word in the latters “Taliban posted in my house” that I am a wanted man.
During my job I faced and survived from more attacks/ ambushes from Taliban in different provinces of Afghanistan Specially in Sorubi district of Kabul while working with Italian Task forces as I mentioned above during an eight-year stint.
Every house they went into, I went into. Every firefight they went into, I went into, I worked in the most dangerous corners of eastern Afghanistan with them.
During my job I usually use to wear mask and assume phony foreigner’s names to disguise my identity. But the Taliban heard about my association with ISAF forces, because I am from a small village where the insurgency has influence.
I am one of the Interpreters being hunted down by Taliban forces because of my work with ISAF-Italian, Many of us have been shot at or kidnapped, and others have hard evidence in the form of death letters and death lists from the Taliban.
They (Taliban) are after me and when they catch me they will kill me because I stood shoulder to shoulder with them when I was Interoperating in the villages, they know me.
My crime was being an interpreter for ISAF-Italian, Because of this job I was going to lose my wife, my wife has been tortured.
Taliban and Mujahidin know my face; if I go home regularly I am 100 per cent certain that I will be killed.
Even though I have been targeted by the Taliban on several occasions, we had uncountable ambushes while working with Italian in Surobi district of Kabul, we had another ambush in the same place while working with French I have lost one of my friend Interpreter and I was pinned down and I thought, this is it, I am going to die on this hillside, probably by a Taliban, we had an ambush in Kandahar, While working with British forces in Helmand province the same happened there, even more ambushes there I fled by a paying a third-party in a rush and without knowing which country I would end up in.
Many of my friends who were interpreters died while serving and many more fled, I am proud of the job which I did. “I did a good job”, I have extremely done my best over the past eight years for a better and brighter future for my country and took part in reconstruction and rehabilitation to bring peace to the region. My family members are receiving consecutive direct and indirect threats due to my employment with ISAF- Forces in Afghanistan why are they treating me like this?
There was carnage when the Russians left Afghanistan in 1990, and I fears the same could happen again.
