Monkeys Don't Belong in Space!
Dear Sir/Madam,
I hear in the media that Iran is attempting to reinvigorate its fledgling space programme by sending a live monkey into space within the next month. Senior figures within the Iranian Government have reportedly stated that the preliminary tests have all been completed and the monkeys (presumably macaques) are currently being kept in quarantine to await their fate. Sadly, there is a long history of animals being cruelly forced to go into space. The first macaque put into orbit was called Albert, sent up in 1949. Since then many animals have been forced to follow, including various species of primates, dogs, mice, fish and frogs, several of whom have never returned. PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) has urged Dr Hamid Fazeli, head of the Iranian Space Agency, to cancel the planned mission, pointing out that primates are no longer sent into space by the American or European space agencies.
Personally, I am horrified by photos in the media of a visibly terrified monkey crudely strapped into a restraint device in which he was allegedly launched into space by the Iranian Space Agency. Monkeys are highly intelligent and sensitive animals who not only are traumatized by the violence and noise of a launch and landing, but also suffer when caged in a laboratory before and – if they survive – after a flight.
The European Space Agency (ESA) – which represents Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the UK – has a very active space exploration programme and has publicly stated that it "- declines any interest in monkey research and does not consider any need or use for such results". The ESA instead employs modern technology such as the state-of-the-art simulators to assess health risks for astronauts. NASA ended the use of primates in space radiation experiments in the early 1990s, when it determined that the results were not relevant to human astronauts. In 2010, NASA’s plans to restart the programme were cancelled after PETA and others voiced strong ethical and scientific objections to the ill-advised plan.
Sending animals into space is cruel and totally unacceptable, and I write today to urge you NOT to continue any space-plans where live animals are involved. Whether Iranians want to travel into space is, - at least as far as I am concerned - their own business, but please leave the animals where they belong: safe and sound here on earth.
Thank you for considering my comments.

The group MOTHERS FOR PEACE and all of the Iranian community in Montreal are extreamly saddened by the news od his death during detention, probably as a result of torture. " This might result in more prisoners of concience" worries the group IRANIAN WOMEN OF MONTREAL. "We appeal to the Iranian authorities to shed light on the circumstances surrounding the inexplicable death of Sattar Behesti as well as the one of Zahra Kazemi, Canadian photographer of Iranian origin in 2003," says Mrs Machouf, who is sending an appeal to Canadian MPs, labor unions, jounalists, human rights groups to apply pressure on the Iranian authorities to) protect the lives of the prisoners of concience and end human rights violations in Iran.
