PERSONAL ATTRIBUTIES
Honest, receptive, respectful, cooperative, confident, transparent, adaptable, and organized
Our family is made up of seven members, six boys and one girl, living in the slum near the town. My daddy who is responsible for my education and now aged, frail, unemployed and with a mere hand to mouth meagre income, was retrenched from his job twelve years ago when I was still in primary school. Ever since he lost the job, he has failed to get a sustaining job for the family, only to gamble and begging here and there for the living. This is due to economic situation prevailing in our country, no jobs, and poverty. We live a peasantry for there are inadequate programmes for development.
The fact that my father is aged and frail; he cannot competitively find a suitable and a home sustaining job in our country where unemployment is a big problem. And at one time he was ridiculed when he went searching for jobs, potential employers just asking why he never prepared for old age when he was still youthful. Even economic policies are deficient, for low income citizens.
Many of us fail to achieve our life aims and objectives due to the family income deficiency and sustainability. Therefore lack of sustaining income in our family is a scenario which causes a lot of worries, for my father he has become a beggar here and there for my fees, threatening my cherished engineering course completion. He has sold off the only valuable properties of the family for my fees, especially at the university, for the last two academic years.
Iam in a dilemma, sometimes I miss food, for the university cannot provide food for someone who has not paid stipulated fees. Sometimes I miss course tests yet they add up to a certain percentage in the finals. My father is now unable to keep my two young brothers, one in upper secondary and another in upper primary schools.
My mother is illiterate, unemployed, aged and frail. She can't even contribute a single shilling to the family; just as she is illiterate she fails to do any job even if she is facilitated. She always also depends on my daddy and her clan relatives. Our first born who drop out of school due to financial difficulties and started up a local video hall, he is the sole provider for our family of seven for tuition fees, health care, maintenance and I don't even know how he does it. With only two more years to go to complete my engineering studies, I discovered it's all gone - no more left to sell for my school fees. Without a miracle, I will have to drop out. To be honest, sometimes I feel like giving up because this is so heavy on me, but I think about my dad, my family background and the community how they will one day benefit from my services as a engineer, if I achieve my dream. This makes me go an extra mile in my struggles and work even harder.
I was almost missing last semester due to the deterioration of my dad's health. Although the university was aware of his condition, it did not recognize it as a disability. the university was only eager to give me a dead semester due to incomplete fees. A lot of pressure applied on my elder brother to pay the outstanding fees and to cope with my dad's deteriorating condition because his absence was too much to bear but finally I had to write a committement letter indicating when to pay the remaining fees balance ( copy attach). Am currently home waiting for some little money from my elder brother so that I pay the 60% of the fees, the university needs.
Choosing the engineering field as my career was an important step in my life and I believe it will give me the opportunity to serve humanity to the fullest of my capabilities through creating and designing products using scientific principles, combined with natural curiosity, problem solving and innovation. Also play an important role in the future development of a sustainable environment because world today is changing very fast in this field in the economies. If I complete my bachelor's course, it will enable me to pursue further studies, for a good life, for the good of my family and my country.
Despite all the difficulties in my life, I never gave up my studies. I trust with the help of the scholarship, Success is not a matter of chance; it is a matter of choice. It is not a thing to be awaited; it is a thing to be achieved. I remain hopeful, with the will of the Almighty God and my message will touch the hearts of my beneficiaries. I will be highly appreciative and grateful of any timely generosity to enable me pursue and complete my course in which am highly keen; and without which my future may be uncertain.
