Sir,
Please know that this site is not oeperated by the French cnsulate general in Pondicherry, But it is available for the public to comment on their matters which renain unsolved or delayed. Except a few matters, others relate to how to get french nationality. In these matters the proper person is a french lawyer in France or french law degree or diploma holder in India. He must see your documents
to give a fair reply,
Any how as an Indian advocate holding post graduate diploma (Gold medallist) and part time professor in French law in the Govt, Law college at Pondicherr, and member of the Institut international de droit d'expression et d'inspiration francaises(IDEF) at Paris and member of Alliance francaise, Pondicherry,
I am able to give reply and advice to yo0ur question.
The abbreviastion G.A or GAI means Gendarmerie auxiliaire indienne, a person serving in local police. He is not appointed on permanent basis, First on recruitment, he enters into contract for a minimum period of 3 years or 5 years, After expiry of the first contract period, he can renew his contract for a further period. If he is able to serve fifteen years without break he will be eligible for pension, According to you, your father served in local police or forces publiques in French India for 9 years from 1943 to 1952. I think your father had quit his service in India. After a break he served in French army and was stationed in Saigon from l052 to 1955 in Saigon, capital of french Indochina now called Hochimin city. Then from 1955 to 1059 he served in France, In the french army also he did not serve for 15 years to be eligible for person, He may have renouunced his personal statute in order to serve in the French Army. As he returned to India we must know what his position with regard to the Franco Indian treaty of cession, 1956
which came into force on 16.08 1982. His renunciation is a sufficient proof that he was a french citizen. If he was born in French India he should have opted to conserve french nationality. In default, he is liable to become Indian, The renounciation to personal statute (persona law) has no effect on frnch nationality,
To finish, I say that a person enters in the French army as soldat, then on promotion he becomes caporal, then caporal chef and then sergeni/offiier and so on,
The post of Caporal may be equivalent to Indian Head constable, I further advise you in order to get
details about the services of your father, you can contact the foyer du soldat, near Manakula vinayagar temple in Pondicherry or you may try to contact the service of assistance sociale, in the French consulate General in Pondicherry, at No.2, rue de la marine, You have to bring with you the service papers, book etc.. of your father for reference, If you come to Pondicherry you may contact me also.My mobile No. 9843648646. Yours sincerely,

Sir.
If a copy of your mother's application is available, it will be possible to know the addressee. Then you can send a reminder . If not, you please contact the person who helped your mother in sending her application and get particulars from him. It is waste to go to a court in Paris without necessary details of the application. Yours sincerely
