Dear Sir or Madam:
I am writing you today to denounce President Correa’s decision to arbitrarily and illegally dissolve the offices of the Quito-based non-governmental organization, Fundación Pachamama.
The President has falsely accused Fundación Pachamama of fomenting dissent and violence in its stand against oil development in and around indigenous territories in the south and central region of the Ecuadorian Amazon. It is clear this dissolution seeks to repress Fundación Pachamama’s legitimate right to disagree with the government’s policies.
It is disturbing to me that the President and Ecuadorian government would find the stifling of this organization’s voice and efforts acceptable. Fundación Pachamama’s work has always been non-violent and within the rule of law. For 16 years, it has given a vital voice to Ecuadorian citizens who want only to protect the rainforest and their ancestral territories, and to be consulted before any potentially damaging actions take place around their communities, as is their legal right.
According to international law United Nations ILO Convention 169, "the right of Indigenous peoples to determine their own process of development" is guaranteed. Ecuador has ratified ILO Convention 169 and acknowledges indigenous nations’ rights to protect and maintain their territories in its national constitution. Fundación Pachamama has been a voice and means for indigenous nations to claim these rights the government has legally bound itself to honor, making its decision to shut down the organization one based in hypocrisy.
I am speaking out today, and will continue to do so, until President Correa reverses his decision and re-opens the offices of Fundación Pachamama.
Sincerely,
Lol Hardiman, Co. Galway.
