Our organization, Bundibugyo Cocoa Association (BCA) is a newly formed smallholder cocoa producer organization operatIing in Bundibugyo District western Uganda in the Rwenzori region. It is registered as a company limited by guarantee under national laws.The association has a total membership of 320 members.Our mission is to empower the smallholder cocoa farmers in the District to address constraints in the cocoa value chain and mitigate livelihood risks through diversification of household incomes,food security,ensure sustainable use of natural resources and advocate for positve policies in the agriculture sector.
The association wishes to establish partnership with the Danish Embassy or its affliates to implement the Smallholder Cocoa Development Poject (SCDP) to improve quality of life of the smallholder farmers.The ultimate goal of the project is strengthen capacity of the smallholder cocoa producers to access good market through the promotion of the cooperative marketing strategy.The process to mobilize and organise the farmers into Area-based Cooperative Societies has already started.The plan is strengthen capacity of these farmer cooperative societies to form a union so that they can petrate better markets globally.But we are constrained by lack of technical capacity to proceed.Bundibugyo District is currently producing about 18,000 Metric tons of cocoa beans per harvest season which brings in the district an estimated 82 billions uganada shillings per annum.The crop is the major source of livelihood to over 80% of the district population and a major driver of development processes in the area.Despite this trend, the sector is not developed and farmers are not yet well organized to improve on quality and cooperatively market their produce.The whole market chain is dominated by a series of middlemen who exploit the rural farmers.Our dream is to gain capacity to engage with different actors in the cocoa value chain and gain access to regional and global markets with quality cocoa beans and products. Being of recent formation, BCA is still young with weak structures and systems to successfully engage with other well positined actors in the value chain.
The purpose of this communication therefore is to request for partnership especially in areas of technical capacity to enable us build sustainable systems to produce,process and cooperatively market quality cocoa beans and products.BCA believes that with capacity we can work to reach our desired destination.
Together,we can achieve MDG1(Eradication of extreme poverty and hunger) in Bundibugyo and Uganda at large
