NEW DELHI: Two Air India planes will land in the Libyan capital Tripoli early on Saturday, beginning the evacuation of Indian nationals from the country now facing a civil war.
The two planes will make the trip daily for the next 10 days. After that India might seek an extension of the Libya’s permission for continued access to the airport.
The planes - a Boeing 747 from Mumbai and an Airbus 330 from Delhi with a combined capacity of 640 passengers - will return to the two cities late in the evening. Tripoli itself has about 8,000 Indians, out of the total 18,000 in that country.
Scotia Prince, the passenger ship chartered by India, will also sail out from the Egyptian port of Alexandria on Saturday, docking at Benghazi in Libya on Monday, and bringing 1,200 Indians back to Alexandria on Wednesday. Air India flights will bring them home from there.
The Navy’s troop-carrier INS Jalashwa - which can hold 1,000 - accompanied by a smaller ship INS Mysore is expected to leave Mumbai on Saturday for Libya.
It would take about 12 days to reach. A third ship is on standby.
