Rod Green speaks utter nonsense without reflecting on the reasons behind the situation
Why exactly should ti be a free service? you are getting something valuable - why should it be free? I have worked in passports and there are few particularities at all - if you present the correct documents, in time, you'll get it. If you present a dog-eared out of date document with no previous passort, 4 days before your holdiay, you won't. And then you're surprised and want to abuse the call receiver?

Don't give me the 'I pay my taxes' argument. If you are resident in France, you don't (if you had a permanent address in UK, you would receive there as it is quicker and cheaper - any rational person would, so expats clearly can't). It doesn't mater if you used to pay - you used to pay, and you used to get public goods (a fire service, a health service, your education). No you don't pay, so you pay directly for the services you consume.

Presnt your document in time correctly, get the passport. If not, don't. But don't bitch about it, and don't wonder why you have to pay to call the service line to bitch at them.

Scandalous !
Great service provided by the govt...not ! Why should I have to pay a fortune to an outsourced service company for information concerning my passport ?!!
There are so many particularities concerning passports and the answers are NOT on the website...so we are held hostage to pay a fortune for what should be a free service. Bloody scandalous !
