Simplified Procedures please.
My Filipino maid has been with me for the past 4 years. As I am very pleased with her honesty and hardwork, I just had her contract renewed in January. Each year I allow her to go home for a short vacation during Easter. This is done out of goodwill and compassion as I can understand how it must feel being away from family and friends for long. However I find it irksome to have to go thru' the embassy procedures and the high costs incurred. Why can't the embassy simplify the procedure for the exit permit. There are so many documents requested. You have the OWWA, OEC etc etc.

I was sent away from the embassy on 3 occassions in the recent week each time citing a shortfall. In the last incident, I took the performance bond of $7000 which expires in May. My maid's return to Singapore had been booked for the 3rd April well before the expiry of the bond. One would think that there would be no problems faced as the existing bond should suffice. It is not a passport which needs a 6 month validity. Just to be sure I went to NTUC Income from where I had originally bought the bond. I was told by the staff there that what I had was sufficient and there was no need to purchase a new one. I left with confidence from there.

However I was to be in rude shock when the embassy staff at window 1 told me he could not accept the document as the validity was only till May. Imagine my frustration. To have to go back get a new bond and return to the embassy to apply for OWWA. So much time wasted. My maid leaves for home on the 16th March.I thought I was early enough for the processes for home leave which I started 3rd week of February.I did not know that you needed an online appointment to get the OEC. When I checked online, the earliest date I could get was on Mar 19th which is well after her departure date. Desperate by then I wrote them an email to which in reply I was given the option of going to Lucky Plaza at 6 am on a Sunday morning, get a queue no and wait. This is indeed a nightmare.
I dont think maids of other nationalities have to go thru such a rigmarole.
This experience leaves me to wonder whether I should let her go back annually. It only discourages the employers. I definitely will think twice before hiring a Filipino in view of such hassle.
I hope the Embassy will review the current procedures and make it easier for the maids to go on home leave. A simplified procedure will benefit both employer and employee

Thank You.
