Violation of Employer in Macau
My niece, Christina (C), has degrees in Education & Nursing but unable to find a job in the Phil with living wage to support her 3 young kids. She left her abusive husband, paid Reliance Agency in Manila to get a job in HK. Her employer released her contract after a year due to divorce. HK Immigration allowed her to find another job but required her to go back to the Phil & reenter & required her to go thru an agency. After 6 weeks she returned to HK & started working with a new employer who gave her a 36-pg list of her daily tasks; she was required to write down the time she starts each chore & time she finished. She was not allowed to eat any of the meals she cooked for the family or cook her own meals. She did not have any breaks or days off. She was asked to sleep on the floor where the cat sleeps. Her day started at 4 am & ended after midnight. The family of 5 abused her with racial slurs, etc. She finally went to a church to ask help & she was taken to Immigration who checked the name of the employer & found out he was blacklisted but was a fried of the Agency who was paid by Christina to find the job but was never fined for what happened. SHe had to pay another Agency to find another job but had to go to Macau as required by law if she's not able to find work in 30 days. She's in Macau & working as a DH which Rose Agency found for her. The family lives in a condo & owns 2 other units in the same bldg which are rented out. C is required to not only work at her employers unit but also clean the other units daily. Her day starts at 4 am & ends at 2 am. She's not allowed breaks, meals & days off. When her employer leaves town, C is not paid for the same number of days her employer are away. She also has to pay for her meals. She cooks, cleans, do laundry by hand, iron, clean up all the clutter. It's non-stop, backbreaking work of 14 hour days at very low pay. Can the Consulate help Christina? It seems the Agencies are not accountable for finding employers who comply with the terms of the contract & all they care about is the expensive fees they charge those who are desperate to find jobs & willing to sacrifice inhumane treatment so they can provide for their families. What exactly is the responsibilities of the Consulate General to protect the Filipino citizens who work abroad? Is there anyway, the Consulate can help C with her situation? If the Consulate General does not put any value to the posted comments here from Filipinos in need, what is the purpose of having this forum? With all due respect to the Consul General, it might be time to have a responsible staff view the postings daily, discuss the concerns & steps the office can help these desperate citizens.
