Terrible experience. I have been trying for years to renew my passport and Italian consulate is terrible. They do not answer phones and make it incredibly difficult. How can I renew my passport?

I must renew my Italian Passport as soon as possible. I have gone on 'Prenota Online' but the next available appointment is next May 2017!
Could you please advise me on what I need to do in renewing my passport as soon as possible; I am more than happy to go to the Italian Consulate and take a number and wait all day if needed. Is this possible?
