Fish farming in West Sepik
Attention: Dr Ir Sedecor Melatunan

Dear Dr.
I read with great interest an article in the local newspaper today. I have only been in PNG less than 2 months and am tasked with business and economic development of the grass roots agriculture and fisheries sectors. I have attached my field trip report from last week to provide an insight into what I am doing.

Recently I spent three years as the in-country head (COP) of the Indonesian Marine and Climate Support project (IMACS) funded by USAID. I was based in Jakarta and worked closely with the Sec Gen and Director Generals but also got out to our 100s of sites throughout eastern Indonesian. Seaweed farming was our biggest single economic activity but we were involved in many other small businesses.

I have worked on ikan mas and tilapia in Timor Leste and other places but as you can see from my title I’m more involved in the business side rather than the production aspects.

There are 10,000 women in Nuku / West Sepik who I am assisting to form a company to buy and sell local produce including fish. There are a few little ikan mas/tilapia farms in the district but they aren’t producing much. The market is there, water supply is good even over the past few months but the farmers needs assistance to develop their ponds to commercial size; and I have located a reliable supply of fish meal for onsite pellet production.

I would love to talk to you about any assistance you might be able to provide in regards to fresh water fish and/or seaweed production.

Best regards

Richard
