Consulate staff
The person who handled the interview was not very focused on his/her work, kept on talking to the desk mate beside him/her, and not pay much attention to the interviewee. Gave very short answers that were sort of vague, and the way he/she spoke comes off as arrogant. Asked me to present documents that were not specified on the list of required documents written on their website

This was for a visa application, hopefully this is not a reflection of everyone's attitude in France

Arrogant Consulate staff! Don't waste your time and money on anything French
My wife (Indonesian passport) was invited to visit France with her French citizen friend and stay with her friend's parents. The staff at the visa section of the French consulate in Sydney fit the "arrogant French" stereotype to a T. A lady there (and I use the term "lady" very loosely) dismissed me like a naughty child when I accompanied my wife to the desk – seems there was a hidden sign that said only applicants were permitted – cant understand why. I wasn't even allowed to wait in the reception area she said. Then she proceeded to treat my wife (English was the second language of both in the conversation) like an idiot because everything wasn't in order although we had done our best to follow the vague instructions on the website. When she returned at a later time with her French friend to try and ensure correct communication, her friend found the visa staff equally arrogant and rude. It seems that helpfulness is not part of their job description. Even if they were unable to approve the application, they could, at least, explain what was wrong or how to rectify problems. When I wrote to them seeking some clarification, they just said follow the instructions on the website (the very instructions I couldn't understand).

In the end she has had to give up on her dream to visit France and it will cost us the penalty of having to cancel her ticket as well as the expense of travel insurance and other costs we have incurred (The website clearly says that travel must be paid for before applying for a visa). Her friend is sad and embarrassed that my wife was treated so badly, so much so she doesn't want to travel there herself. I will NEVER go to France (I have been years ago, but never again), and I will seek every opportunity to dissuade people from going there or doing anything that will benefit France (even buying French wine). It may be a small protest that doesn't impact on France very much, but at least I will know that I haven't wasted my money on them.

Who needs the French anyway? If the rest of the country is like the arrogant people at the consulate, you would be better off spending your money travelling to a place all are welcomed.

Poor experience
French system is hyper-conservative. I am international student from Vietnam, studying in Brisbane and I would go on exchange to France, I do not really know law or requirements for French visa here. I got acceptance letter from French university quite late and there are NO appointment left, even there are 2 more months to go.
I already planed everything, even received the scholarship from school. Now I have to cancel all just for a stupid flight to Sydney and lodge stupid complex visa requirements? If the French do not improve, they must be out-of-date.
